Instrument Rating Requirements


61.65 - Instrument Rating Requirements
To be eligible for a Instrument Rating, a person must:

- Hold at least a current private pilot certificate with an airplane rating
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
- Pass a written exam on the on the aeronautical knowledge areas of
FAR 61.65(b).
- Receive flight training and a logbook endorsement from an authorized
instructor who:
1) Has conducted the training in the areas of operation listed in FAR 61.65(c)
2) Has certified that the person is prepared for the required practical test.
- Meet the aeronautical experience requirements as outlined in FAR 61.65(d).
- Pass a practical test on the areas of operation listed in FAR 61.65(c).

61.65 - Aeronautical Experience
At least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command of which
at least 10 hours must be in IFR airplanes;
At least 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument on the areas of operation
of this section, including
1) At least 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized
instructor;

2) One cross-country flight performed under IFR including
a) A total distance of at least 25onm along airways or ATC-directed routing
b) An instrument approach at each airport
c) Three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems.
3) 3 hours training in preparation for the practical test within the preceding
60 days
